Golfing legend Amy Alcott pairs up with City of Hope

City of HopeAmy Alcott, a member of the World Golf and LPGA Tour Halls of Fame, has embarked on a new partnership, this time with City of Hope. Alcott will launch her new role as City of Hope’s first-ever golf ambassador at the upcoming PGA TOUR event, the Northern Trust Open, to be held Feb. 14-17 at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. City of Hope is the new official charity of the Northern Trust Open, one of the longest-running and most respected tournaments on the PGA TOUR.

At the Northern Trust Open, not only will Alcott greet golfing fans and tournament attendees at City of Hope’s hospitality venue, but she’ll also host the City of Hope/Be the Match putting challenge for tournament patrons. Be The Match is a registry operated by the National Marrow Donor Program that finds bone marrow and blood stem cell matches for patients suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening blood diseases.

“As a long-time supporter of City of Hope, I am honored to be joining the City of Hope team as golf ambassador,” Alcott said. “It is wonderful to be able to use the sport of golf as a vehicle to connect with more audiences and to use this platform to help raise awareness and funding for the amazing work that City of Hope does.

Alcott has won 32 tournaments worldwide, including five major championships. She is celebrated as one of the most creative shot makers in the modern era and is credited with starting one of golf’s greatest traditions: jumping into the 18th-greenside lake at Mission Hills Country Club, host site of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, an LPGA major. Alcott has transitioned her professional playing career into writing a book and delving more into her love of golf course architecture, a true passion of hers; she is part of the team selected to design the golf course for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her second book, “The Leaderboard: Conversations on Golf and Life,” was published by Simon and Schuster in March 2009 and features interviews with long-time friends Bill Clinton, Jack Nicholson and Annika Sorenstam among others.

Alcott’s new role with City of Hope is an evolution of the relationship dating back more than a decade when she hosted an official LPGA Tour event in Southern California that benefitted City of Hope. Alcott also has long worked with City of Hope at top-tier golf events. Now, as part of the first formal agreement between the golfing legend and City of Hope, Alcott will host golf clinics and tee off with donors at key functions of the organization, starting with the Northern Trust Open.

“City of Hope is extremely pleased to have a legend like Amy Alcott on board, and we know this partnership will be a deeply rewarding experience for us both,” said Steven Martin, Vice President, Marketing, for City of Hope. “Amy’s skill, her passion for the sport and her commitment to the great work we do will help us share the City of Hope message with new audiences.”

Bid for 2016 Olympic Course Design

I’m excited to share with you that I am part of a design team that will make a final presentation later this month to the Rio 2016 Olympic Committee for the Olympic golf course design project. Our team is led by my good friend and noted architect Gil Hanse. Gil was named GOLF Magazine’s 2009 “Golf Course Architect of the Year” and has designed courses throughout the United States and around the world. He has been entrusted with renovations of The Country Club of Brookline, Fishers Island Club, Los Angeles North and a host of other classic venues. And earlier this year he was commissioned to build 27 new holes at Bandon Dunes in Oregon. Needless to say, to team up with Gil, in association with Gil Hanse Golf Design, and our other partners from The Larkin Group for such a landmark project is a true honor. And for all of you history buffs, 2016 will be the first time since 1904 that golf will be contested in the Games so being a part of this particular design project brings even greater significance for the opportunities this presents for the game of golf locally in Brazil as well as globally.
